Immediately upon the canvass of the vote showing the adoption of this amendment, it
shall be the duty of the governor of the state to issue his proclamation accordingly,
and thereupon the city of Denver, and all municipal corporations and that part of
the county of Arapahoe within the boundaries of said city, shall merge into the city
and county of Denver, and the terms of office of all officers of the city of Denver
and of all included municipalities and of the county of Arapahoe shall terminate;
except, that the then mayor, auditor, engineer, council (which shall perform the duties
of a board of county commissioners), police magistrate, chief of police and boards,
of the city of Denver shall become, respectively, said officers of the city and county
of Denver, and said engineer shall be ex-officio surveyor and said chief of police
shall be ex-officio sheriff of the city and county of Denver; and the then clerk and
ex-officio recorder, treasurer, assessor and coroner of the county of Arapahoe, and
the justices of the peace and constables holding office within the city of Denver,
shall become, respectively, said officers of the city and county of Denver, and the
district attorney shall also be ex-officio attorney of the city and county of Denver.
The foregoing officers shall hold the said offices as above specified only until their
successors are duly elected and qualified as herein provided for; except that the
then district judges, county judge and district attorney shall serve their full terms,
respectively, for which elected.
The police and firemen of the city of Denver, except the chief of police as such,
shall continue severally as the police and firemen of the city and county of Denver
until they are severally discharged under such civil service regulations as shall
be provided by the charter; and every charter shall provide that the department of
fire and police and the department of public utilities and works shall be under such
civil service regulations as in said charter shall be provided.
